The band was formed in 1987 as East Yorkshire Brass. Until 1998 the band managed to ’survive’ owning only six instruments but thanks to an Arts Council of England Grant of £37,000 and a significant amount of fund raising, the band took delivery of a full set of instruments.
The band had been very fortunate to have free of charge rehearsal facility at the Bell Hotel, Driffield, however the good news of our instruments including a full set of percussion did in fact give us another problem! That of storage space and transportation. However very quickly the Yorkshire Clothing Company came to our rescue and provided us with palatial facilities above the Driffield Store.
January 1999 saw a very important milestone in the life and future development of the band when after supporting the band in the manufacture of a CD in 1998 Tryton Foods Ltd of Hull committed to a 3-year sponsorship deal for the band. It was at that point that we became known as ‘Aunt Bessies East Yorkshire Brass’. Without this generous financial backing and more importantly their encouragement and support we would have found it difficult to sustain our charitable work.
In 2002, the band was proud and extremely privileged to receive The Chairman’s Award for services to East Yorkshire. 2003 saw many changes to the band. Our sponsorship deal although extended past its original three years came to an end and the band therefore had to decide on a new name. After some thought it was decided that we would become the East Riding of Yorkshire Band.
We also had to vacate our band room and had been fortunate to find temporary facilities in Beverley that was greatly appreciated, however we had to vacate those when the council redeveloped the site, and the band is now rehearsing at Clowes Methodist Church in Hull.
